Immune Responses Flashcards
1
Q
Process of phagocytosis
A
- The phagocyte is attracted to the pathogen due to the chemical products produced by it
- The phagocyte has several receptors on its membrane that attach to the chemicals on the pathogen
- The phagocyte engulfs the pathogen leading to the formation of a phagosome
- The lysosomes release their lysosymes into the phagosome, where they hydrolyse the bacterium
- The hydrolysis products are absorbed by the phagocyte
2
Q
Physical defence mechanisms
A
- Skin: acts as a tough barrier consisting of keratin
- Stomach acid: kills bacteria
- Gut and skin flora: natural bacterial flora competes with pathogens for food and space
3
Q
Non specific immune responses
A
- Lysosome action
- Phagocytosis
- Inteferons: interferons prevent virus spreading to uninflected cells by stopping protein synthesis in viruses
4
Q
Specific immune responses
A
- Cell mediated response
- Humudol response
