Immune Response Flashcards
Basophils
A type of white blood cell that releases histamine during inflammation
Eosinophils
A type of white blood cell that that phagocytizes the antigen
Phagocytosis
A process by which cells engulf and digest foreign substances and dead cells
Neutrophils
A type of white blood cell that phagocytizes bacteria
Monocytes
A type of white blood cell that phagocytizes bacteria, dead cells, and cellular debris
Lymphocytes
A type of white blood cell that involved in immune protection; attacks cells directly or produces antibodies
Macrophages
White blood cells within tissues; produced by differential of monocytes. functions include phagocytosis and stimulating lymphocytes and other cells o respond to pathogens; one of the first lines of defense in the inflammatory process
Mast cell
Cells found in the connective tissue, beneath the skin, in the gastrointestinal mucosa, and in the mucosal membranes of the reparatory system. Functions relate to allergic reaction immunity, and wound healing
Plasma cells
White blood cells that developed from B cells and produce large amounts of specific antibodies
B cells
Cells that mature in the bone marrow, where they differentiate into ither memory cells or immunoglobulin cells. functions include eliminating bacteria, neutralizing bacterial toxins, preventing viral infection, and producing immediate immune response
Helper B cells
A type of regulator cell that activates B cells to produce antibodies
Memory B cells
A type of B cell that aids in the quick response to subsequent exposures to n antigen; these cells recall the antigen as foreign
T cells
Cells that are produced in the bone marrow and mature in the thymus . two major types work to destroy antigens; regulator and effector cells
Killer T cells
A type of T cell that destroys cells infected with viruses by releasing lymphokines that destroy cell walls; also called cytotoxins or effector cells
Histamine
Vasoactive amine that increases vascular permeability, causes vasodilation, and bronchoconstriction
Serotonin
A vasoactive amine that increases vascular permeability, vasodilation, bronchoconstriction, nausea, and vomiting
Complement system
is a group of plasma proteins that attract white blood cells to sites of inflammation
Incidence
The number of new cases of a disease
Prevalence
Number of cases of a disease or condition in a particular period
Morbidity
refers to the presence of a disease
Mortality
most often discussed as the number of deaths from a disease
Hemolytic anemia
increased destruction of red blood cells
Hemophilia
Disorder characterized by excessive bleeding
