Immobility And Rehabillitation Flashcards
What are the stats with physical immobility and morbidity/mortality?
4th largest cause of disease and disability
Direct contributor to 1/6 deaths in the UK
What is sarcopenia?
Age related loss of muscle mass and function:
- Low muscle mass
- Low muscle strength or
- Low physical performance
What is osteopenia?
Age related loss of bone mass
What’s wolff’s law?
Bone density directly proportionate to stress out on it
What are some complications of immobility/bed rest?
Cardiopulmonary: decrease in blood volume, cardiac de conditioning (resting HR increases), postural hypotension, dvt, pneumonia
MSK:
Loss of strength, antigravity muscles affected a lot, increase in non-contractile tissue (stiff), risk of muscle/ligament/tendon contractures, loss of bone density
Renal/GI:
Calculi, UTI, loss of urgency, skin integrity- pressure sores, low appetite, stomach transit times slows, constipation
