Immigration
The action if coming to live permanently in a foreign country.
Naturalization
The legal act r process by which a non-citizen in a country may acquire citizenship or nationality of that county.
Migration
A number or body of humans or animals moving from one region to another.
Alien
A foreigner, especially one who is not a naturalized citizen of the country where they are living.
Green card
A permit allowing a foreign national to live and work permanently in the US.
Visa
An endorsement on a passport indicating that the holder is allowed to enter, leave, or stay for a specified period of time.
Refugee
A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.
Quota
A limited or fixed number or amount of people or things in particular.
The Chinese Exclusion Act
One of the most significant restrictions on free immigration in US history, prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers.
Philanthropy
The desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.
Vertical Integration
The combination in one company of two or more stages of production normally operated by separate companies.
Horizontal Integration
A strategy where a company creates or acquires production units for output which are alike.
Monopoly
The exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service.
Trust
Firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.
Capitol
Wealth in the form of money or other assets owned by a person or organization or availability or contributed for taking their purpose such as starting a company or investing.
Social Darwinism
The theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals.
Tenement
A room or set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block of apartments.
Labor union
An organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests
Strike
A refusal to work organized by a body of employees as a form of protest, typically an attempt to gain a concession or concessions from there employer
Progressive
A person or group of people in favor of a social reform or new, liberal ideas
Muckraking
The action of searching out and publicizing scandalous information about famous people in an underhanded way
Jim Crow
The former practice of segregating black in the United States
Preservation
To keep something from injury, harm, or decline.
Conservation
The prevention of decay of works of art
