What were some push factors?
Land was scarce, farm machines were replacing workers, political or religious persecution, and political unrest.
What were some pull factors?
Jobs, land, religion, and promise of freedom.
Suburbs
Residential areas outside or near the city.
Settlement houses
Community centers that offered services to the poor.
What were some services offered in settlement houses?
Taught classes in American government and English, gave instruction on health care, provided nurseries for children, and provided recreational activities.

Set standards for construction and safety.
