A
Shortage of workers > Commonwealth citizens were given free entry > immigration form the Caribbean, India and Pakistan
Increasing immigration caused racial tension > for jobs + housing > race riots (1950s) > Notting Hill riots 1958 (1 week)
Result: Race Raltion Act 1965 = no discrimination because of skin colour, race ethic background or nationality (exeption: private boarding houses/shops)

- 1950s/60s: immigration continued > by 1971: over 3 million immigrants
- late 1960s+1970s: East African refugees (Kenya/Uganda)
Result of increasing immigration: right-wing protests especially in areas with a high proportion of immigrants (industrial areas in Noth England)
1972: new restrictions > British passport holders born overseas were allowed to settle only if they had a work permit or a (grand)parent bkrn in UK - 1980s-2000: refugees from Eastern Europe
- 2004: 10 new countries in EU > people could move to UK
Immigrants: brought their culture: Notting Hill Carnival (Caribbean culture / every year); influence politics, sports, media
London: citizens from over 90 countries

- most immigrants from Poland (nearly 900,000) - Poland joined the EU 2004
- second highest number of immigrants: Indian people (about 860,000) > tend for Indians to seek work in the UK has continued despite stricter immigration politics from 1972 onwards
