The ‘colour bar’
British citizens had the same rights to work and use public facilities.
BUT people of colour were excluded or denied access often.
Race riots
1919 - angry mobs of unemployed white Britons attacked minorities for ‘taking British jobs’.
Cardiff, Newport, London etc.
Discrimination
1919 - Trade Unions also fought for the ‘right’ of white workers.
Alien Orders Act
1920 - required migrant workers to register with the police before seeking work, those who failed were punished by deportation.
Special Restictions Act
1925 - Forced ‘coloured’ seamen to prove their British citizenship or face deportation.
Assumed that they were non-British unless they could prove it.
Unfair - few carried such important documents with them.
