‘India’ rebelled and became under direct British control
Asians have been coming to England since the early days of British rule in ‘India’

Some came to avoid conflict
Entitled to British passports
Some places suffered floods and famines
Some needed jobs
Early migration from Eastern Europe
Many people have come to Britain from Eastern Europe
There were 86,000 migrants in England and Wales and 10,000 more in Scotland by 1901
The Irish
During the middle ages Irish traders and merchants had contact with Britain by the 5th century
Most migrants were poor
Prepared to work for low pay
Mostly Catholic
Most couldn’t speak English
Black immigration
Some black people came to Britain willingly but most were slaves
The money from the slaves made Britain extremely rich
The windrush generation
The windrush generation was many black people who arrived in Britain looking for work
They all had different skills
They were conscious of discrimination
Attitudes to immigrants in the 50s and 60s
Immigrants made shops and restaurants and people rioted saying that white mens jobs were being given to black people
Restricted black immigration to only commonwealth countries
The National Front was made to discriminate against black people
