Football
Catholic immigrants set up football clubs like Hibs and Celtic. These teams have brought national pride and success to Scottish sport, and created culturally significant rivalries with their protestant counterparts, Hearts and Rangers.
Sectarianism
The Irish brought their religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, which can be seen through the orange order, a Protestant group that do marches each Summer. The extent of religious differences in Scotland was much less beforehand.
Denominational schools
Immigration increased denominational schooling, particularly Catholic schools after the 1918 Education (Scotland) Act when the government took control of these schools. Immigrants had taken education into their own hands to ensure Catholic children received appropriate schooling, making sure every child received adequate education.
Food
Italian immigrants introduced many wildly popular foods, like ice cream, and fish and chips, all of which were generally affordable for the average person. These changed the nation’s tastes and ave more variety to affordable meals.
Fashion
Italian and Jewish immigrants in particular had an impact on fashion, with many Italians working as barbers and hairdressers, while some Jews worked in the tailoring industry, producing suits at affordable prices. The combination of these helped make taking care of one’s appearance much more affordable and accessible too much of the working classes.
Names
Italian and Irish immigrants brought surnames such as Capaldi or O’Connel, these names have spread through Scottish populations through generations of marriages. These grew to be somewhat common throughout Scotland.
Religions
Italian and Irish immigrants brought Catholicism and built Catholic churches for worship, and Jewish immigrants brought Judaism and built Synagogues. This diversified the range of religions commonly practised in Scotland.
Social clubs
Protestant Irish immigrants opened Orange Lodges, while Catholic Irish immigrants opened Hibernian clubs. These became places to socialise in general, giving Scots greater social opportunities.
