Define Assimilation
The process of becoming a part, or making someone become a part, of a group, country or society.
Define Asylum Seeker
Someone who leaves their own country, often for political reasons or because of war, and who travels to another country hoping that the government will protect them and allow them to live there.
Define Brain Drain
The situation in which large numbers of educated and very skilled people leave their own country to live and work in another one where pay and conditions are better.
Define Cosmopolitan
Containing people from many parts of the world.
Define Country of Origin
The country from which a person originally comes.
Define Cultural Bereavement
The loss of social structures, cultural values and identity felt by some migrants when living in a new country.
Define Culture Shock
A feeling of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety that people may experience when moving to a new country or experiencing a new culture or surroundings.
Define Diaspora
A group of people who spread from one original country to other countries.
Define Cultural Mosaic
A situation where ethnic groups, languages, and cultures coexist within society.
Define Economic migrant
A person who travels from one country or area to another in order to improve their standard of living.
Define Expatriate
A person who lives outside their native country. *Note that the application of this word to people from certain countries is contentious.
Define First generation immigrant
An immigrant born abroad, or the child of an immigrant, born in the target country. There is no broad agreement on which definition to use.
Define illegal immigration
The migration of people into a country in violation of the immigration laws of that country, or the continued residence of people without the legal right to live in that country
Define Migrant
Any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence.
Define Imperialism
A policy of extending a country power and influence through colonization.
