PARAGRAPH 1 (Before deciphering the code)

A
  • Alan built the machine … his arrogance means that he refuses to engage with others in his team. (example - film techniques too). Viewer has witnessed his failure and feels dejected alongside Alan.
  • Alan needs the team to progress as he can’t decipher it on his own but it takes the convincing of his only friend Joan to let them in (explain).
  • At this point, Alan decides to join the the team at the pub - Alan is opening up and the viewer is keen to see the result of this.

PARAGRAPH 2 (The Sequence)

A
  • Decode enigma
  • Bar-explain what happens. voices quieten. Camera zooms. Focus on hi eyes - we know that something has been triggered but we’re not sure has. Leading to audience wonder and excitment.
  • Run-wide shots. Dramatic diegetic, fast paced music to emphasise the rush and intensity of the discovery. Viewer feels exhilarated, excited to see what happens
  • Cabin-close up of weather reports. Hugh and Alan discuss common themes - speaking abruptly, short sentences. Epiphany - shows disbelief. Viewer is astounded, thrilled etc. Huge constrast from earlier when Alan was seeped in failure.
  • Machine .. Huge, imposing, dark. Wide shot. Frantically plugs wires in to sockets that fit the code. Runs to switch, turns, music quietens. All you can hear is the gears turning - louder and louder. Stops. Everyone quiet. Realisation in the silence that has worked. Silence - wonder. Impact on viewer.

CONCLUSION

A
  • Name of text and director. Sum up
  • This key sequence engages the viewer and makes them feel as though they are in the moment with the characters in the film. Through witnessing their initial failure, their success - as exemplified throughout the sequence - is all the more impactful. The use of diegetic music, effective camera shots and characterisation leads the viewer to feeling excited and feeling a sense of anticipation as to how the characters relationships will develop as a result of this discovery.
