IMCI Principles
A
- all sick children are examined for DANGER SIGNS which indicate the need for urgent referral or admission
- all sick children are routinely assessed for the MAJOR SYMPTOMS
- all sick children are also assessed fir MALNUTRITION and ANEMIA
- check IMMUNIZATION, VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENTATION, FEEDING and other potential problems

Danger signs
A
- drink or breastfeed
- vomit everything
- convulsions
- lethargic or unconscious
- convulsimh now

Major problem
A
- cough or difficulty breathing
- diarrhea
- fever
- ear problem

A
50 bpm or > in 2 months to 12 months
40 bpm or > in >12 months to 5 years

A
- any general danger sign
- chest indrawing
- stridor

A

A
No signs of pneumonia

What to do in severe pneumonia?
A
give 1st dose of appropriate antibiotic the refer URGENTLY to the hospital

What to do in peumonia
A
- give appropriate antibiotic for 5 days
- soother the throat and relieve cough with a safe remedy
- advise mother when to return
- follow up in 2 days

A
- coughing >30 days, refer
- soother the throat and relieve cough with a safe remedy
- advise mother when to return
- follow up in 5 days if not improving

What to assess for presence of dehydration
A
- general condition or sensorium
- sunken eyes
- able to drink eagerly
- pinch the skin of abdomen

How to do skin pinch test
A
Locate the area: halfway between the umbilicus and side of abdomen
Pinch using thumb and first finger
Fold of the skin will be line up and down NOT ACROSS
firmly pick up all the layers for 1 second then release
