Image Receptors Flashcards
What two types of digital system are available?
Solid state censor
Photo stimulable phosphor
When is direct action film used?
Intra oral radiography
When is indirect action film used?
Extra oral radiography
In direct film what do the xrays act on?
Silver halide crystals in the film emulsion
In indirect film, how is image produced?
Light from intensifying screen acts on silver halide crystals in film emulsion
How do photo stimulable phosphor plates work?
Phosphor layer absorbs and stores xray energy in electrons of phosphor crystals Plate inserted into scanner Scanned by red laser Blue light emitted Light detected by photomultiplier tube Light converted to electrical signal Relayed to computer Converted to digital image
How is the digital image erased?
Bright light releases trapped energy
What does CCD stand for?
Charged coupling device
What is the CCD made up of?
Back cover incorporating cable
Silicon wafer
Scintillator layer
Front cover
What is the purpose of the silicon wafer?
Converts light to electrical signal
What does the scintillator layer do?
Converts X-ray energy to light
How do CCD work?
Xray hits scintillator layer
Light given off
Light hits photosensitive cells in silicone layer
Pixels made up
Electron released and form charge which is converted to voltage
Computer converts electrical signal to an image
What does CMOS stand for?
Complementary metal oxide semiconductor
How does CMOS differ from CCD?
Photo cells electrically isolated therefore voltage comes from each individual cell.
What gives better quality image?
CCD
