What must you check before giving an
IM injection
The patients name and hospital number are the
same as on the prescription chart & That you know the therapeutic uses of the medicine
to be administered
What action should you take when a contraindications
to the prescribed medicine is
discovered
Do not give the medication and inform the ward coordinator
and the prescriber
Two reasons to give IM injections are?
Avoids risk of vomiting & Because the drug given is altered by intestinal
secretions
Two possible issues with injection a route of
medication administration are;
Risk of injury to nerves and/or blood vessels in the
area & Risk of sharps injury to the person giving the
medication
Before giving medication which two should
do
Check expiry dates and record lot numbers of the
medication & Ask the patient about any allergies or history of anaphylaxis
What are possible complications of IM
injections
Pain & The patient may get a bad taste in their mouth
How can you avoid sharp injury?
Dispose of the equipment immediately
What should you do in
the case of a needle stick injury
Attend Occupational Health dept – assess risk and
take appropriate action & Bleed wound under running water and wash with soap and water
Student midwives can administer controlled
medication which is on the midwifery
