Acute and chronic
What is chronic illness?
It comes on more slowly and lasts for a long period of time, sometimes a lifetimes.
How can chronic illnesses be treated?
Diabetes Arthritis Asthma Heart disease Bipolar disorder
How can you manage chronic illness?
Use medication to control symptoms
Continued schooling whilst being in hospital
Counselling
Opportunities to socialise with other young people

Poor rate of growth

What is acute illness?
It starts quickly and lasts for a short period of time.
Examples of acute illnesses:
Bacterial infection
Viral infection
Heart palpitations
How to mange acute illness?
They can often be treated in the short term with medication.
Chickenpox…
An acute viral infection that usually affects young children. It goes away quickly and long term negative effects are rare.
Links between acute and chronic illness
Long term conditions, such as chronic heart disease, may lead to acute illness, such as a heart attack.
