What is ileus?
A
Cessation of bowel peristalsis.

What is the most common cause of ileus?
A
Abdominal surgery

What else can more rarely cause ileus?
A
- Intra-abdominal infection/inflammation
- Trauma
- Electrolyte Imbalance
- Pneumonia

What are the symptoms of ileus?
A
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain
- Bloating/distension
- Vomiting

What sign is seen in ileus?
A
Sluggish bowel sounds

How should ileus be managed?
A
- NBM/Sips of water/IV fluids
- NG if vomiting
- Mobilisation
- Consider parenteral nutrition in prolonged periods

When should a jejunostomy be used vs a PICC?
A
- Jej - if expecting a long term requirement of feeding
- PICC - if expecting a shorter term feed e.g. less than 28 days
