Spout - as the effluent is erosive and damages local skin
What are the contents of an ileostomy bag
Liquid
How would you advise a patient to manage their ileostomy
Needs to be emptied multiple times throughout the day (more than colostomy)
Change the bag daily
Change the base plate under the bag every 5 days
*Psychological and psychosexual support
What are the complications of an ileostomy
Complications related to the stoma:- Stenosis Prolapse Parastomal hernia Retraction
Complications specific to an ileostomy:- Obstruction Dehydration Mucous discharge from rectum Vitamin B12 deficiency Stones - gallstone and renal stones increase in frequency following an ileostomy
When would an end ileostomy be performed
Following panproctocolectomy (typically for UC)
It is permanent
When would a loop ileostomy be performed
Over a low anastomosis of anterior resection
To allow the anastomosis to heal
It is a temporary measure
