Q

Compare and contrast the four views of the Lord’s Supper. Which view do you
hold?

A

Memorialism (Baptist) - Symbolic and commemorative reminder of the body and blood of Jesus. The bread and wine “represent” his body and blood BUT Christ uses mysteruous language (John 6, matt 26)

Spiritual presence - elements represent Christ body and blood but by the Spiirt we are mysteriously united to Christ’s presence.

Consubstantiation - Bread and wine do not become the body and blood in essence, but that the essence of Christ’s body and blood are in and under the elements. BUT Heb 1 says that the body of Christ is in Heaven

Transubstantiation - The wine and blood in essence become the body and blood, though the accidents remain unchanged.

Q

What is your view of the Roman Catholic mass?

A

it is repugnant, not to Scripture alone, but even to common senese and reason, repugnant and contrary to the once for all sacrifice of Christ.

It is a form of idolatry to call the bread and wine God and to honor as such. 1 Cor 11:26-27 says that the partakers eat bread–it is still bread, not transformed into something else.

Q

How is the Lord’s Table to be fenced in the PCA? Are you willing to uphold this
in your practice?

A

“Since, by our Lord’s appointment, the sacrament sets forth the communion of Saints, the minister, at the discretion of the Session, before the observance begins, may either invite all those who profess the true religion, and are communicants in good standing in any evangelical church, to participate in the ordinance; or may invite those who have been approved by the session, after having given indication of their desire to participate. It is proper also to give special invitation to non-communicants to remain during the service.”

Q

May an individual who has doubts about his or her own assurance of salvation rightly come to the Lord’s Table?

A

Yes. Assurance does not qualify but an ability to discern the body and blood of Christ and to feast upon him in your heart. The Lord’s supper builds up the assurance of our salvation.
