Larceny is defined as
(i) the taking;
(ii) of another person’s property;
(iii) by trespass;
(iv) with the intent to permanently deprive that person of the property.
Embezzlement is defined as
(i) the fraudulent;
(ii) use, concealment, or disposal;
(iii) of property;
(iv) of another;
(v) (1) received for anther person or for one’s employer,
(2) received by virtue of one’s office or employment, or
(3) otherwise entrusted.
False pretenses is defined as
(i) Obtaining property subject to larceny;
(ii) by any false pretense;
(iii) with the intent to defraud; and
(iv) both title and possession must pass.
Robbery is defined as
(i) the taking;
(ii) with intent to steal;
(iii) the personal property of another;
(iv) from his person or in his presence;
(v) against his will;
(vi) by violence or intimidation.
Extortion is defined as
the taking money or property from another by threat.
Common law burglary is defined as
(i) the breaking and entering;
(ii) of a dwelling;
(iii) of another;
(iv) at nighttime;
(v) with the specific intent to commit a felony or larceny therein.
Arson is defined as
(i) the malicious burning;
(ii) of the dwelling;
(iii) of another.
Note: VA includes the malicious burning of an occupied or unoccupied building, personal property, or crop.
Battery is defined as
(i) the unlawful;
(ii) application of force;
(iii) to another person;
(iv) that causes bodily harm to that person or constitutes an offensive touching.
Assault is defined as either
(i) an attempt to commit a battery; or
(ii) intentionally placing another in fear of immediate offensive touching.
Kidnapping is defined as
(i) the taking or detaining of another person;
(ii) by force, intimidation, or deception;
(iii) without legal justification; and
(iv) with the intent to deprive the other person of his personal liberty.
Forgery is defined as
(i) using, possessing, or forging;
(ii) a public record, coin, note, or bill;
(iii) knowing the same to be forged; or
(iv) with the intent to pass them off as true.
Bribery is defined as
(i) giving, offering, or promising;
(ii) a public officer or candidate for public office;
(iii) any gift or gratuity;
(iv) with the intent to influence his act, vote, opinion, decision, or judgment on any matter.
Note: the person accepting the bribe also commits bribery.
