III. Night

‘The night is mine, my own time, to do with as I will, as long as I am quiet.’

• Offred takes advantage of the time she has to herself at night to reminisce on her past to restore some of the memories. * The night is the only thing in her life that she “owns” or has any sort of control over.

‘Nobody dies from lack of sex. It’s lack of love we die from.’

• This shows that love is an intrinsic part of life and survival that Gilead lacks.
• Even though the women have sex, they do not enjoy it but they have to do it for reproductive purposes.
