II. Egg Industry Flashcards
is the most exploited species of poultry terms of food productions (eggs and meat) all over the world.
chicken
FACTORS that must be considered in determining the LOCATION
- land availability and cost
- topography of the area
3 neighbors & human population
4 acceptability - electricity; water and feed supply
- transportation facilities
-market relationship
3 essential requirements in successful brooding namely;
- reliable source of heat
- balanced feed & abundant water
- strict hygiene & sanitation
Brooder houses which has 2 types;
° colony brooder
° permanent brooder
small & moved from place to place
colony brooder
colony brooder has 2 types;
a. single unit or battery brooder
b. multi-unit or apartment brooder
used for large scale production. these brooders are with concrete; wooden or dirt flooring.
permanent brooder
using coal; wood; saw dust) rice hull; animal dung; charcoal; oil; kerosene; and gas (LPG) as fuel. this require more attention.
stove brooders
uses incandescent bulb; nichrome wire; or infra-red bulbs as heating elements.
electric brooders
used in large farms wherein brooder fans drive aur thru a radiator heated with steam or hot water and hot air is circulated in the brooder room
unit-space heater brooders
maintaining hygiene & sanitation can be done by satisfying the following;
a. genetic requirement
b. biological requirement
c. environmental requirement
following are the factors to be considered in environmental requirement;
° hover and floor space requirement
° feeding space requirement
° watering space requirement
growing period is divided into the following phases;
- hardening phase
- finishing phase
following routinary management jobs are performed upon transferring the birds from the brooders to the hardening pens
- separation of sexes
- culling of undesirables
- fowl pox vaccination
when the birds are to be
transferred from hardening to
finishing pens, the following
routinary jobs are done
° culling
° debeaking
° avian pest vaccination
otherwise termed as period of adjustment , which may take a about one month from the time the chicks are removed from the brooders.
hardening phase
birds in the brooder are under
controlled environment
in the growing houses, the birds are under
natural condition
covers the period from the end of hardening phase until the birds are sexually matured.
finishing phase
floor space requirement
920 two 2,000 sq. cm. per bird
watering space requirement
10 linear cm. or 2 twelve-liter fountain per 100 birds
feeding space requirement
space 7.5 to 10 linear cm
consider the following points before engaging in table egg production
- personal qualifications and capabilities
- availability of resources
- supply of good stocks
- constant supply of other farm inputs
- market assurance
- site of the farm
- waste management
criteria in selecting egg type strains to raise
-performance
-availability of stock and reliability of suppliers
-consumer preference
are the most commonly used roofing material both for large and medium-sized poultry houses
galvanized iron
aluminum
poly vinyl carbonate sheets
it is commonly used for better disease control program
slatted type floor
are those devices that provide the necessary heat to keep the growing chicks warm
brooders or heaters
are enclosures on the brooder heat source that prevent the chicks from moving too far from the source of heat.
brooder guards
the more popular methods of heating brooders are through the use of;
conventional gas
hoover type heater
infrared heat bulb
conventional kerosene
conventional electric
also be used as heat sources
burned charcoal
rice hull
sawdust
poultry house equipment and facilities
brooder heaters
brooder guards
cup type waterer
culling in holding equipment
waterers
feeders
it is the process of providing supplemental heat to the chicks from hatching up to the time that the chicks have grown sufficient feathers and have developed it’s thermoregulatory system to control their own body temperature
brooding
the brooding period covers the first
4 to 6 weeks of the chicks life
guide for successful brooding
- start with healthy and good quality chicks
- provide proper temperature
- good quality feed
- fresh and clean drinking
- proper ventilation
- adequate floor space
- adequate lighting facilities
- proper sanitation
- adequate protection
