Ignition / Magnetos Flashcards

1
Q

What is the main advantage of a magneto ignition over a battery ignition for an aircraft with reciprocating engine?

A

A magneto has it own source of electrical energy and is not dependent upon the battery.

Q

What is the difference between a hot spark plug and a cold spark plug?

A

A hot spark plug has a long path for the heat to travel between the nose core insulator and the spark plug shell.

In a cold spark plug, the heat has a shorter distance to travel.

Q

Why is it important that the spark plugs be kept in numbered holes in a tray when they are removed from an engine?

A

Each spark plugs can tell a internal condition of the cylinders from which they were taken.

Determine the condition of the cylinders.

Q

Why is it important to always a torque wrench to install a spark plugs?

A

if the spark plugs are no put in tight enough, there is the possibility of poor seal.

if they are put too tight, there is danger of creaking the insulation or damaging the threads on the cylinder or spark plug.
