Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic Flashcards
Some examples of igneous rock are
Basalt, Granite, Pumice
What are metamorphic rocks used for
Buildings, statues, roofing, and countertops
How are Sedimentary rocks formed
Weathering - Breaking apart Erosion - Carrying away Deposition - settling out Compaction - Pressing together Cementation - gluing together
What are some extra facts about Sedimentary rocks
The layering affects, fossils are typically found in these rocks, and they are softer rocks which means that they break easier
How are igneous rocks classified
Extrusive and intrusive, extrusive means that it was formed outside of the volcano and intrusive means that it was formed inside of the volcano
How are metamorphic rocks classified
Foliated and nonfoliated, foliated means that there are layers from being squished, nonfoliated means that the minerals are arranged randomly
What are igneous rocks used for
tools and building materials, statues floors, and counter tops
What are some examples of metamorphic rocks
gneiss slate quartzite marble schist
How are sedimentary rocks classified
Clastic - Rock fragments squeezed together
Chemical - Forms when there is a change in the enviroment such as watering evaporating from a pond leaving no water left behind
Biochemical (organic) - made from oncel living things (fossils)
How are igneous rocks formed
from cooling magma/lava
What are sedimentary rocks used for
Tools and building materials
How are metamorphic rocks formed
Metamorphic rocks are formed when any type of rock experiences extreme heat and pressure and slowly turns into another rock like sandstone will turn into quartzite
Extra facts about igneous rocks
Lava - outside of the volcano, cools faster, air pockets, forms small or no crystals, low silica content, glassy, fine grained
Magma - Slow cooling, large crystals, high silica content, coarse grained
Examples of Sedimentary Rock
Fossils, Sandstone, Shale, and limestone
Extra facts about Metamorphic rocks
formed under the surface of the earth because there is not enough pressure or heat can be found on the surface of the earth
Protolists - are the rocks that metamorphic rocks come from
