IGNEOUS ROCKS Flashcards
Property of magma that determines whether it flows easy
Viscosty
Magma type produced at the coolest temperatues
Felsic
Occurence of phenocrysts
Phenocrysts, as with any other rock forms from the cooling of molten rock or magma.
What is magma assimilation?
Assimilation is the process whereby solid or fluid foreign material is incorporated into magma.
Largest Igneous intrusions by volume
Lopoliths
Vesicles are
the small holes left behind after lava cools and turns into volcanic rock.
Porous rocks that float are
Pumice Stones
Batholiths are
a large mass of intrusive igneous rock
Stocks are
an igneous intrusion that has a surface exposure of less than 100 square kilometres (40 sq miles).
Laccoliths are
A laccolith is a body of intrusive rock with a dome-shaped upper surface and a level base, fed by a conduit from below. A laccolith forms when magma rising through the Earth’s crust begins to spread out horizontally, prying apart the host rock strata.
Sills are
a tabular sheet of igneous rock intruded between and parallel with the existing strata.
Magma type at divergent plate boundaries
The magma type is BASALTIC in composition and is buoyant.
Dikes are
a sheet of rock that is formed in a fracture of a pre-existing rock body.
Pegmatities are
an igneous rock showing a very coarse texture, with large interlocking crystals usually greater in size than 1 cm (0.4 in) and sometimes greater than 1 meter (3 ft).
Intrusive Rocks
Intrusive rocks are formed from magma that cools and solidifies within the crust of the planet.
