Igneous Rock Processes Flashcards
Define Igneous rock
(example x2)
rock that is formed by the cooling and solidifying of molten magma or lava
E.g - Basalt and granite
What is the difference between magma and lava
Magma is underground where as lava is above the ground on the surface
What is magma
Magma is extremely hot liquid and semi-liquid rock located under Earth’s surface
What is lava
Lava is molten rock ejected by volcanoes in the form of liquid above ground.
What is a batholith
a type of igneous rock that forms when magma rises into the earth’s crust, but does not erupt onto the surface
How are granite batholiths formed
- Large volume of magma rises into Earths
crust - The magma does not erupt
- The magma cools and solidifies into
granite usually
What does hydrothermal mean
Hot water
Explain how Hydrothermal metal ores are deposited
- Hot magma rises through the crust
- Water in surrounding rocks becomes
super heated - Metals & minerals go into solution
(dissolve) - Hot water moves away from the magma
along fractures - Water cools as it moves away from magma
- Minerals & metals precipitated out of
solution at different temps
What is a hydrothermal metal ore
Accumulations of valuable minerals which formed from hot waters circulating in Earth’s crust through fractures
What are four examples of metals that are deposited during hydrothermal deposition
- gold
- silver
- tin
- copper
