What do you need to do in order to remain instrument current?
Within the last 6 calendar months in the same aircraft category logged via actual/simulated instrument, FTD:
“6 HITS”
- Six Instrument Approaches
- Holding procedures & tasks.
- Intercept & Track courses through the use of electronic navigation Systems.
If you’re using an ATD, then what must you do to remain instrument current?
Within the last 2 months:
- 3 hours instrument experience
- Holding procedures & tasks
- 6 Instrument approaches
- 2 Unusual attitude recoveries in a descending V_NE condition.
- 2 Unusual attitude recoveries in an ascending stall speed condition.
If you go past 6 months can you still get instrument current?
Yes. You will have to perform “6 HITS” with a safety pilot (under simulated conditions), instructor, or pilot examiner.
What are the requirements for the safety pilot?
Must be at least a private pilot with the appropriate category and class. Must have adequate vision forward and to each side of the aircraft. The aircraft must have a dual-control system.
Can you get instrument current up to 12 months from last currency?
Yes. You need to do an instrument proficiency check (IPC) by a CFII, examiner, or approved person.
Where can you find tasks for Instrument Proficiency Check?
In the back of the Pilot Test Standards book. They can be completed in an approved flight simulator or FTD. However, a full IPC can only be conducted in certain full-motion simulators or in the actual aircraft.
What are the requirements to carry passengers as PIC?
- 3 Takeoffs and Landings within the preceding 90 days in the same category, class, and type (if req.)
- At periods between 1 hour after sunset and 1 hour before sunrise: 3 Takeoffs and Landings to a full stop during the period 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise in the preceding 90 days.
What are the requirements to act as PIC?
Take a flight review in the last 24 months. This can be accomplished if taking a checkride, or other exceptions.
