IFR Flashcards

1
Q

What does FAR 135.173 and the Ops manual say about thunderstorms?

A

When operating IFR, if thunderstorms can be reasonably expected, we must have operational airborne weather detection equipment. Also, at a minimum, severe thunderstorms will be circumnavigated by 20 nautical miles. If a thunderstorm cannot be circumnavigated, the pilot will terminate the flight at the nearest appropriate airport or landing site.

Q

Do we need to have weather reporting available at our destination to file IFR?

A

If a weather report is not available, we may use a report within 15 nautical miles. If nothing is available within 15 nautical miles, pilots may use a Graphical Forecast for Aviation (GFA), a source approved by the NWS, or a source approved by the FAA. In this case we need an alternate.

Q

What aircraft systems and checks need to be performed for IFR prior to engine start?

A
  • Current 30 day VOR check
  • current GPS database
  • current publications to include
  • low altitude charts
  • terminal procedures
  • special IAPs
  • GPS manual is usually required to be onboard- check STC for required items

Q

What are T and TK routes?

A

Low altitude RNAV routes for enroute and terminal environments. TK routes are specifically for helicopters, and are followed by a 3 digit number.

Q

If comms are lost under IFR, when should you leave a clearance limit?

A
  • At your EFC time
  • if no EFC time…..

If clearance limit is a fix where the approach begins, at ETA or

And visibility of 3SM or 2SM above the lowest applicable approach minima, whichever is higher

17
Q

What are the new hire IFR limitations?

A

All approach MDA, DH or DA altitudes will be increased 200’, and minimum visibility for departure or approach will be 1SM (but not less than approach

  • 12 month for initial IFR qualification
  • 6 months after transition to another model
18
Q

What are the requirement for an alternate airport?

A
  • must be authorized
  • must have an instrument approach
  • forecast weather, 200’ above minimums for the approach to be flown and visibility of at least 1sm but not less than the visibility for the approach

What are the weather requirements for a PinS approach where the MAP is 3 NM or less from the landing area?

A

Day 600’/2SM

Night 600’/3SM

21
Q

For all other instrument approaches, including PinS, if the distance from the MAP to the landing area is greater than 3SM but no more than 6SM, what are the weather requirements?
