IFR Flashcards
What does FAR 135.173 and the Ops manual say about thunderstorms?
When operating IFR, if thunderstorms can be reasonably expected, we must have operational airborne weather detection equipment. Also, at a minimum, severe thunderstorms will be circumnavigated by 20 nautical miles. If a thunderstorm cannot be circumnavigated, the pilot will terminate the flight at the nearest appropriate airport or landing site.
Do we need to have weather reporting available at our destination to file IFR?
If a weather report is not available, we may use a report within 15 nautical miles. If nothing is available within 15 nautical miles, pilots may use a Graphical Forecast for Aviation (GFA), a source approved by the NWS, or a source approved by the FAA. In this case we need an alternate.
What are Metro’s standard takeoff minimums?
1/2 SM or 2400 RVR
What aircraft systems and checks need to be performed for IFR prior to engine start?
- Current 30 day VOR check
- current GPS database
- current publications to include
- low altitude charts
- terminal procedures
- special IAPs
- GPS manual is usually required to be onboard- check STC for required items
What are T and TK routes?
Low altitude RNAV routes for enroute and terminal environments. TK routes are specifically for helicopters, and are followed by a 3 digit number.
What is included in a non-radar position report?
Identification Position Type of Flight Plan Altitude Time ETA Name of next reporting point Remarks
What reports are required at all times under IFR?
Cancelling IFR
Altitude changes
Missed approach
Safety of flight Weather Equipment failure Entering/Exciting a hold Performance (500fpm- 5% or 10kts whichever is greater)
What additional reports are required when not in radar contact?
- ETA changes of 3 minutes or more
- Leaving Final Approach Fox or Outer Marker inbound
What altitude do we fly if communications are lost under IFR?
Highest of
Minimum IFR altitude
Expected
Assigned
If comms are lost under IFR, when should you leave a clearance limit?
- At your EFC time
- if no EFC time…..
If clearance limit is a fix where the approach begins, at ETA or
Proceed to a fix where approach begins & start approach/descent at ETA
What is included in a malfunction report to ATC?
N number
Equipment affected
Degree in which flight is affected
Assistance needed
What are the lowest approach minima we are allowed to use?
200’/ 1/4 SM or 1600 RVR
If no approach lights are operational on a precision approach, what is the minimum visibility required?
3/4sm
Can we do circling approaches?
Yes if the weather is 1,000’/3SM or greater
What is Vmini in the EC135?
60 kts
