IFR Flashcards
What is a DME
Distance measuring equipment. The transmitter is on the aircraft and sends an SSR signal to a ground unit. It accurately and continuously measures slant range from the aircraft to the tuned ground station
ILS deviation formula
You’re 5 DME and the CDI reads 2 dots left
DME x dots x 50 = deviation in ft
5 x 2 x 50 = 500ft left of centreline
How many degrees is full CDI deflection on a VOR
10 degrees
How many degrees is full CDI deflection on a ILS
2.5 degrees
What is a VOR
Uses the phase difference in the variable and reference radio signals. Between 112Mhz and 117.95Mhz. It is used to obtain the aircraft direction from the VOR transmitter
How to follow the localizer needle instructions inbound and outbound
Inbound - follow the needle
Outbound - turn away from the needle
Glideslope correct altitude based off 3 degrees formula at 3DME and a threshold elevation of 200ft
Distance x 300 + Threshold elevation
3 x 300 + 200 = 1100ft
Rate of descent formula
G/S x 5 = ROD
Glideslope deviation formula
Full deflection
1/2 deflection
Full deflection
DME x 70ft = ft above or below
1/2 deflection
DME x 35ft = ft above or below

What does the HDG key on Flight Director (FD) do
Captures and tracks the selected heading
What does the NAV key on the Flight Director (FD) do
Captures and tracks the selected navigation source. (VOR, LOC, FMS)
