We use If + h___ (‘d)… to talk (not real situation) about the past.

Compare:
- I’m not hungry. If I was hungry, I would eat something. (now)
- I wasn’t hungry. If I’d been hungry, I would’ve eaten something. (past)
- If I’d seen you, of course I would’ve said“hello”. (past)
- I would’ve gone out if I hadn’t been so tired. (past)
- If he’d been looking where he was going, he wouldn’ve walked into the wall. (past)
Do not use w____ in the “if-part” of the sentence. We use it in the other part.

- If I had seen you, I would have said hello. (not If I would have seen you)
Note that ‘d can be would or had.
- If I‘d seen you = If I had seen you.
- I‘d have said hello = I would have said hello.
We use the past perfect (“had done“) after wh___.
We use the past perfect (“had done”) after whish.
- I wish I’d known that Brian was sick. I would’ve gone to see him.
- I feel sick. I wish I hadn’t eaten so much cake.

Note: Do not use “would’ve” after wish.
