Second KKK (1920s)
- response to social and demographic changes taking place (preserve a traditional American identity)
- support resitrictive immigration policy such as national origins act of 1924
- opposed advancement for civil rights and equalities of non-white
- viewed immigrants and minorities as outsiders and a threat to moral, social, and political fabiric of US
- political power to further their agenda
Eugenics
- Shaped policy from late 19th century to early 20th century
- southern and eastern europeans were of bad blood/ inferior stock
- fueled by racial ideology/ said that criminality and other undersirable traits were hereditary
- rooted in pseudo science
Great Depression and “Voluntary Repatriation”
- economic down turn in the 1920-1930, lead to belife that mexicans were taking US jobs (Herbert Hoover calls for deportation)
- Voluntray repartiation- was just forced expulsion
- disregard for constiutional rights as mexican americans were racialy targeted( against 14th amendment)
New deal coalition

-Lead by Franklin D. Roosevelt representing a significant shift in the democratic party
- involved apointing Hews and catholics to government positions ( had been WASP)
- mobilized migrant voters to democratic party for generations to come
- was not perfect provided employment assistance to african americans but some acts such as social security act had discriminatory impacts
Nazism and connection to “scientific racism”
- scientific racism is a pseudo scientific belife that distinct human races have inherently different traits
- nazis used this to justify genocide of groups such as Jews and Slavs
- Nazis drew influence from US policy siuch as Johnson read immigration act of 1924
Jewish holocaust
- 1924 immigration act limited southern and eastern europeans whcih included Jews
- ## Racial ideology for it was based in scientific racism
Japanese Internment
- occured during WWII
- rooted in longterm systematic racism
- Chinese exclusion act of 1882 laid ground work for asisn discrimination
- Franklin D. Roosevelt Executive order allowed for incarceration of over 110,000 japanese- americans with out any charges or due process.
“Zoot Suit” Riots
- Zoot suit was a fashion trend among mexican americans, african americans and Filipino American youth
- White americans saw this as unpatriotic, and a sign of criminality, fueling racial tensions during the time of WWII
- riots were triggered by the SLEEPY LANGOON MURDER CASE
- riots involved white serviement and citizens to attack youth wearing the Zoot Suits
No-No Boys
- Comes from two questions that were asked as a part of the incarceration process of japanese internment All in the camps had to answer
- “are you willing to serve in US military”
- ” Will you swear unqualified allegiance to the US”
- sayign no resulted in harsh consequences and imprisonment
Immigration and Nationality act of 1952 (McCarren-Walter act)
- included the quota system from the 1924 immigration act
- eliminated raical bar to citizenship allowing asians to become citizens
- But it added teh asian pacific triangle- quota on asians
- heavily influenced by the cold war
- remained until immigration act of 1965
Immigration act of 1965 ( Hart-Celler Act)
- abolished the national origns quota that had been in place since the 1920s
- some said this was a majormiles stone in for racial make up of US
- others argue traditional america will be lost
- focused on family and skilled worker immigration
Transnationalism
- ## view allows for a deeper understanding of how race and its catagorization have shaped policies acorss borders
Refugees and asylees- catagories
refugee- someone outside their country unable or unwilling to return due to a fear of persecution
- Asylees meet the refugee description ut are already in the US or are at a port of entry

Immigration Reform and Control act of 1986
- dealt with undocumented immigration into the US signed by ronald reagan
- made it illegal for employers to knowingly hire undocumented immigrants
- ## implemented a prgram for illegal immigrans in the US prior to 1982 to apply for legal status
California Proposition 187 (1994)
- Save our state iniative
- during the 1990s california saw a large inflow of latinos which lead to concerns abotu a strain of the pubic resources
- the proposition sought to deny public resources to undocumented immigrants in california
- it was passed but created more divide the good
