What is Bantu Migration literally?
The people of Bantu moved West towards central Africa in by 0 and moved southeast frequently reaching present-day Zimbabwe by 800 A.D. and reaching the southeastern coast by 1600 A.D. while spreading knowledge of iron-working across Africa
What is the City of Kilwa literally?
City of Kilwa was the strongest city on Africa’s Eastern Coast by the late 13th century. Kilwa has control over territory as far north as Pemba and south as Sofala. Kilwa was a part of the Swahili Coast which meant that Kilwa was in a strategic position for trading commodities such as gold, ivory, cloth, and iron tools with India, East and South Asia, Middle East, Europe, and Egypt.
What is the Gold Trade literally?
The gold trade was the movement of gold across the Sahara to many empires starting from Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana, moving up to Egypt and Europe eventually going down the Red Sea to India where it was used to pay for silk and spices.
What is Iron Working in Africa literally?
Knowledge of iron working was introduced to Africa by the 600 A.D. by the Phoenicians. Iron quickly adapted into everyday life and hunter-gatherer groups became settled town and villages using iron for agricultural tools but also as currency. Settled economies made needs much more obvious.
What are the Nok People and Art?
Nok Art is a type of art represented by sculptures of either human or animal that is highly stylized with an emphasis on spherical shapes. The sculptures were found near the village of Nok (where it got its name). We do not yet know what the origins of the Nok people are but we know that they had a developed civilization in present day Nigeria in Western Africa.

Camel caravans carried salt from the salt mines of Taudenni, 500 miles north of Timbuktu, and was transported down along Niger River to a town of Mopti.
Who is Sundiata literally?
Sundiata created the empire of Mali, first in Niana and spread his territory out, absorbing former territories of Ghana and captured well established trading cities such as Gao, Jenne, and Walata, and established a strong foundation for his descendants to follow.
Who is Mansa Musa literally?
Mansa Musa is the descendant of Sundiata, founder of Niani/Mali) and ruled over Mali with a strong belief in Islam. His connection with Islam caused him to take a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 in which he visited Egypt where he destroyed the value of money due to the overflow of gold in Egypt.
What is the Swahili Coast literally?
The Swahili Coast is a series of city-states along the southeast coast of Africa that had a strong commercial and religion relationship with India, Egypt, Middle East, South Asia, and Europe. With the arrival of Arabs and Indonesians in the 12th century and the Portuguese in the 15th century. Swahili is a mixed-race community and a mixed religion community with Islam being the main religion
Why does Bantu Migration matter?
Bantu Migration matters because it helped spread knowledge about iron working to the rest of Africa where it became useful in the making of iron tools and more sophisticated stuff such as Nok sculpture of the Nok people (800 C.E. ~ 200 A.D.)
Why does the city of Kilwa matter?
City of Kilwa matters because it allowed expansive trading in the Eastern Africa, South Asia, India, and the Middle East. City of Kilwa became a major city for diffusion and syncretism as commodities and religions from different countries met and dispersed from there.
Why does the Swahili Coast matter?
The Swahili Coast matters because the city-states along the Eastern Coast of Africa had major maritime trade routes to Egypt, Middle East, Europe, South Asia, and India. The Swahili Coast was basically a dock where everything was exported out for Africa. While the Trans-Saharan desert trade routes traveled across land, the Swahili Coast trade developed maritime trading.
Why does Sandiata matter?
Sundiata matters because Sundiata is the beginning of the great empire of Mali. He set up a government for Mansa Musa to follow and for all his descendants. Without Sundiata, kingdom of Mali would not have had a strong base/fundamental to build from.
Why does Mansa Musa matter?
He matters because his strong attachment to Islam made Mali more “Muslim” by building with bricks and wearing flowing robes and turbans of Muslim. This made the religion of Islam spread to Africa, where Islamic features are still seen today. Understanding Mansa Musa’s thought and beliefs can help us understand why the religion of Islam came to be in Africa. Also, his overflow of gold in Egypt allowed other ancient empires to understand the value of money
Why does the Nok Art and People matter?
The Nok matters because it represents the Nok people. It shows an extent of artistic description long believed unfound able in ancient Africa. It also shows the usage of Iron in Ancient Africa, and signifies the Bantu migration.
