IDP - According to Patho Fx, 6 Stages, 4 Levels & 3 Burners Flashcards

1
Q

Identification of Patterns According to

PATHOGENIC FX

A

Pathological changes occurring when the body is invaded by Pathogenic Fx such as:

  1. Wind
  2. Dampness
  3. Cold
  4. Heat or Summer-Heat
  5. Dryness
  6. Fire

Q

Identification of Patterns According to

SIX STAGES

A

Primarily used for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases from EXTERIOR COLD.

(But many of its recommended herbal prescriptions are still used nowadays to treat Internal, Hot conditions.)

identification of Patterns According to

THE THREE BURNERS

A

Usually COMBINED with the FOUR LEVELS for diagnosis and treatment of FEBRILE INFECTIONS DISEASES starting with Invasion of Wind-Heat

Q

According to the Eight Principle POV, Pathogenic Fx always correspond to a Full or Empty pattern?

A

FULL

although they can be of Exterior or Interior origin

6
Q

From the 8 Principle POV, a Full condition is defined as one characterized by

A

the presence of Pathogenic Fx while the body’s Qi is still relatively intact

7
Q

A FULL-EMPTY condition can arise in one of TWO ways

A
  1. Pathogenic Fx can give rise to a Deficiency
    (i. e. Fire weakens Yin)
  2. Deficiency leads to a Pathogenic Fx
    (i. e. SP-Qi Deficiency leads to Dampness)

Q

Organ Relationships to Pathogenic Fx

A
Wind = Spring (LV)
Cold = Winter (KD)
Summer-Heat (HT)
Dampness = Late Summer (SP)
Dryness = Autumn (LU)

Q

Clinical Manifestations of WIND

A
Rapid Onset, Rapid changes in symptoms
Symptoms Move in the body
Can cause Tremors, Convulsions
Can cause Stiffness, Paralysis, Numbness, Tingling
Affects Top part of the body
Affects LU first (External)
Affects LV first (Internal)
Affects Skin & Itching

Q

EXTERNAL WIND invades the LU’s Defensive Qi portion (exterior of the body) causing exterior symptoms such as

A

Aversion to Cold
Fever

Q

EXTERNAL WIND may be COMBINED with

A
Cold
Heat
Dampness
Dryness
Water
17
Q

Exterior Wind can invade ANY channel, especially the ______ channels, and settle in the joints

A

Yang

18
Q

Wind attacks the most superficial channels fir, which are the Greater-Yang channels

A

SI & BL

19
Q

WIND-COLD Symptoms

A
Aversion to Cold, Sneezing, Cough
Runny Nose w/ white watery mucus
Fever, Severe Occipital Stiffness & Ache
No Sweating, No Thirst
P: Floating-Tight
T: Color unchanged, Thin White Coating
20
Q

WIND-HEAT Symptoms

A
Aversion to Cold, Fever, Sneezing, Cough
Runny Nose w/ slightly yellow mucus
Occipital Stiffness & Ache
Slight Sweating, Has Thirst
Itchy, Sore Throat, Swollen Tonsils
P: Floating-Rapid
T: Red body, Red tip or sides w/ thin white coat
21
Q

WIND-COLD Explanation

Prevalence of Cold

A

If Wind combines with Cold, with a prevalence of Cold, there will be no sweating b/c Cold contracts the pores. The pulse will be tight - corresponding to the attack on the Greater-Yang stage within the 6 stages.

22
Q

WIND-COLD Pathology Explanation

Wind Predominates

A

When Cold is NOT prevalent and the pores are open, there is slight sweating and the pulse is slow (Floating-Tight)

23
Q

WIND-COLD Pathology Explanation

A

There is aversion to Cold b/c this interferes w/ the circulation of Defensive Qi in Skin and Muscles. Since Defensive Qi warms the muscles, an impairment of its circulation leads to Aversion of Cold in the beginning stages.

24
Q

WIND-DAMPNESS Pathology Explanation

A

Consists of Invasion of Ext Wind & Dampness at beginning stages. Dampness obstructs connecting channels causing swollen glands in the neck or in the muscles/joints causing muscle/joint ache & a feeling of heaviness of the body.

25
Q

WIND-DRYNESS Pathology Explanation

A

Is Wind-Heat with Dryness at the Defensive Qi level. Other symptoms are due to Dryness injuring Body Fluids. The tongue coating is white b/c the pathogenic factor is on the Exterior.

26
Q

WIND-WATER Pathology Explanation

A

Exterior Wind prevents the LU from opening the Water passages & diffusing & descending the fluids. Bcz fluids can not descend, they overflow under the skin causing edema - most prominent in the Face, which is caused by the LU dysfunction - mostly affecting the upper burner.

27
Q

Bell’s Palsy Facial Paralysis mainly affects the channels in the face, which are
