Absolutism/Absolute Monarchy
a political system in which a king or queen (a monarch) has complete and total control over the government.
Divine Right
a political idea that a king/queen’s (monarch) power and right to rule comes directly from God. No human or government group can limit the king’s power.
Constitutional Monarchy
a political system in which a king/queen’s (monarch) power is limited by written laws (a constitution).
Parliament
a group of people who are elected to make and change the laws of a country. Similar to the United States’ Congress.
Scientific Revolution
a movement during the 1500s-1700s during which scientists questioned old scientific theories and religious ideas. Focused on using careful observation and experimentation.
Rationalism
the idea that your actions should be based on reason and experience instead of emotions and religious beliefs
Scientific Method
a systematic approach to research and inquiry that emphasizes observation, experimentation, and evidence-based conclusions
Natural Laws
rules that explain how the natural world works. These could be discovered through observation and experimentation.
Enlightenment
a movement during the late 1600s-1700s. Focused on questioning traditional political ideas
Natural Rights
a political idea that the government could not deprive anyone of the rights to life, liberty (freedom), and property.
Social Contract
a political idea that states that people give up some of their rights in exchange for the protection and order provided by a government. If the government fails to protect the people, then the people can change the government.
Tabula Rasa
the idea that people are born as “blank slate.” Knowledge comes from experience and education.
Separation of Powers
The idea that the government should be separated into 3 branches so no one person has ALL the power
