What is ITP?
A
It is an immune mediated reduction in the platelet count where antibodies are directed against the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa or Ib-V-IX complex.

What 2 types of ITP can you get?
A
Acute and Chronic

Describe acute ITP
A
- More commonly seen in children
- Equal sex incidence
- May follow an infection or vaccination
- Usually runs a self-limiting course over 1-2 weeks

Describe chronic ITP
A
- More common in young/middle-aged women.
- Tends to run a relapsing-remiting course.

What is Evan’s syndrome?
A
ITP in association with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA)
