پیشاپیش خبر دادن. مثلا وقتی میخواهید یک متن طولانی برای کسی بفرستید، از هفته قبلش بهش میگید که بدونه باید برای خوندنش برنامه ریزی کنه و برنامه هفته آینده اش رو سبک کنه. یا مثلا اگه میدونید که قرار دکتر دارید و ممکنه دیر برسید سر کلاس، به استاد از چند روز قبلش میگید. یا حتی مثلا استاد میگه از قبل دارم بهتون میگم که طی چند جلسه آینده، ممکنه یک کوییز رو بدون اعلام قبلی بگیرم، بنابراین آماده باشید. معمولا هم به این شکلها استفاده میشه:

  • Hi Susan. Just a heas-up that I will be late for the meeting. Please start without me.

+ Thanks for the heads-up. We will start without you, then.

Class: please give me a heads-up when you are going to be late for class.

ریشه اصطلاح از داستانی در انجیل میآید.

In the tale, the king of Babylon is throwing a feast using vessels stolen from the Jewish Temple, blaspheming and worshipping idols. A hand appears and writes a mysterious message on the wall. The king calls upon Daniel to interpret the message for him. Daniel reads the handwriting on the wall, interpreting the message as a warning that the Babylonian king’s rule is coming to a swift end. Which immediately comes to pass.

یعنی کافی نیست. مثلا در جمع به یکی تهمت زده‌اید و تنهایی (در خفا) دارید ازش معذرت میخواهید، بهتون میگه
I’m afraid that’s not going to cut it.
یعنی نمیبخشم و این معذرت خواهی الکی به درد نمیخوره.

یا مثلا چوب ماهیگیری که از وسط شکسته رو فقط چسب نواری بزنید،

اگه کار بدی کرده، بهانه براش بیاریم که مثلا ممکنه یادش رفته یا حواسش نبوده.
- He did not even say hi to me.
+ Give him the benefit of the doubt. He must have not seen you, otherwise I am sure he would have talked to you.

The student turned in her homework a day late. She said she thought it was due that day. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and accepted her work (=I believed she was telling the truth)

نقشه‌هام نقش بر آب شد. افتضاح شد. البته معنی منفی‌ای که تو فارسی دارن این اصطلاحها رو لزوما نداره. ممکنه به خاطر اشتباه استراتژیکی که کردید کار خراب بشه، ممکن هم هست، نه.
My solution to fix the code blew up in my face.

I tried becoming his friend, but my plans blew up in my face.

Their political campaign tried to tarnish the competing candidate, but all their efforts blew up in their faces and had the opposite effect.

یعنی یک کاری که در حال انجام بود، بین کارهای دیگه گم شد. یا مثلا نصفه انجام شده بود، ایمیل به یکی زدید که قسمت بعدی کار رو انجام بده، اون یادش رفته، شما هم یادتون رفته پیگیری کنید.

یا اگه میخواهین چک کنین که طرفتون یادش نرفته، بی ادبی نیست اگه بگین

دلشوره میگیرم. تو دلم رخت میشورن. نگرانم. دلم مثل سیر و سرکه میجوشه

یه جای کار میلنگه! یه ایرادی داره. حالا ممکنه شما ایراد رو بدونین و توضیح بدین، یا حتی ممکنه نتونین انگشت روی اشکالش بذارین ولی ته دلتون میدونین یه چیزی سر جاش نیست. یه مشکلی داره.

She said she spent hours on the project, but she has made barely any progress. Something doesn’t add up.

He said their investment firm can double my money every six months, but that’s way higher than what the market can deliver. Something’s amiss here.

لزوما همیشه مثل جمله‌های بالا معنی منفی نمیده. مثلا شما یک چیزی رو طراحی کرده‌اید، ولی میگید
I feel like something is missing.
یعنی احساس میکنین یه جاییش ایراد داره.
= something is wrong with my design, but I can’t point my finger to it.
که این جمله آخر هم اصطلاحه.

که اون جمله اول نفر دوم هم اصطلاح مفیدیه
(don’t be fooled by someone’s looks)
مثال دیگه:

یعنی سر به سرش نذار. پدرت رو درمیاره.
