حرف احمقانه زدن. خود یا کسی رو خجالت زده کردن
I put my foot in my mouth when I mentioned how old she was.
Pulling teeth = Kicking and screaming
به زور کاری رو انجام دادن.
Writing a recommendation letter feels like pulling teeth to me.
She didn’t want to clean up her room, but she ended up doing it despite kicking and screaming.
Come on! It’s not like pulling teeth!
You had it coming
حقت بود! تنت میخارید. باید انتظار چنین نتیجه‌ای رو میداشتی.
You had it coming: you went to the movies instead of studying (so you failed your exam).
You had it coming: you kept insulting her (she broke up with you)
Heads-up
پیشاپیش خبر دادن. مثلا وقتی میخواهید یک متن طولانی برای کسی بفرستید، از هفته قبلش بهش میگید که بدونه باید برای خوندنش برنامه ریزی کنه و برنامه هفته آینده اش رو سبک کنه. یا مثلا اگه میدونید که قرار دکتر دارید و ممکنه دیر برسید سر کلاس، به استاد از چند روز قبلش میگید. یا حتی مثلا استاد میگه از قبل دارم بهتون میگم که طی چند جلسه آینده، ممکنه یک کوییز رو بدون اعلام قبلی بگیرم، بنابراین آماده باشید. معمولا هم به این شکلها استفاده میشه:
- Hi Susan. Just a heas-up that I will be late for the meeting. Please start without me.
+ Thanks for the heads-up. We will start without you, then.
Class: please give me a heads-up when you are going to be late for class.
It doesn’t ring a bell
به جا نمیآرم. به نظر آشنا نیست.
+ Have you seen this painting?
- Doesn’t ring a bell.
A: “Have you ever heard of Steve Robinson?” B: “Hmm, the name doesn’t ring a bell with me.”
The writing on the wall
شواهد که نشون میده اتفاقی (بد) قراره بیفته
People are using cell phones more often. The writing on the wall is that landline phone companies will be in trouble.
The stock market was volatile. He saw the wiring on the wall and sold his assets.
ریشه اصطلاح از داستانی در انجیل میآید.
In the tale, the king of Babylon is throwing a feast using vessels stolen from the Jewish Temple, blaspheming and worshipping idols. A hand appears and writes a mysterious message on the wall. The king calls upon Daniel to interpret the message for him. Daniel reads the handwriting on the wall, interpreting the message as a warning that the Babylonian king’s rule is coming to a swift end. Which immediately comes to pass.
[something is] not going to cut it / not gonna cut it [informal]
یعنی کافی نیست. مثلا در جمع به یکی تهمت زده‌اید و تنهایی (در خفا) دارید ازش معذرت میخواهید، بهتون میگه
I’m afraid that’s not going to cut it.
یعنی نمیبخشم و این معذرت خواهی الکی به درد نمیخوره.
یا مثلا چوب ماهیگیری که از وسط شکسته رو فقط چسب نواری بزنید،
That tape’s not gonna cut it. It’s not strong enough.
Give the benefit of the doubt
حسن ظن داشتن به یک نفر
اگه کار بدی کرده، بهانه براش بیاریم که مثلا ممکنه یادش رفته یا حواسش نبوده.
- He did not even say hi to me.
+ Give him the benefit of the doubt. He must have not seen you, otherwise I am sure he would have talked to you.
The student turned in her homework a day late. She said she thought it was due that day. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and accepted her work (=I believed she was telling the truth)
Blew up in my face
نقشه‌هام نقش بر آب شد. افتضاح شد. البته معنی منفی‌ای که تو فارسی دارن این اصطلاحها رو لزوما نداره. ممکنه به خاطر اشتباه استراتژیکی که کردید کار خراب بشه، ممکن هم هست، نه.
My solution to fix the code blew up in my face.
I tried becoming his friend, but my plans blew up in my face.
Their political campaign tried to tarnish the competing candidate, but all their efforts blew up in their faces and had the opposite effect.
[to be] floored
فکّم اومد پایین! از تعجب مُردم!
I was floored when I saw my entry [in the writing competition] won the first place!
See how I can jump over this. (jumps). Are you floored?
Go crazy
(جدای از خل شدن از سختی یه چیزی یا دیوانه شدن از دست یک نفر که خیلی حرصتون میده، معنی خوب هم داره:) دیگه هر کاری خواستید بکنید. هر نوآوری که به نظرتون رسید رو انجام بدین (در این پروژه). هر چقدر که میخواهید شیرینی بردارید از این میز. درباره نوآوری یا قابلیتهایی که میتونید (میتونه) انجام بدید، این هم میشه گفت:

شوخی کردن، دست انداختن
Don’t believe him: he’s pulling your leg. (he is messing with you. He is saying a lie as a joke).

حق مطلب رو ادا نمیکنه.
Calling Saddam cruel doesn’t do him justice [he is worse than cruel].

- The picture doesn’t do it justice. It’s by far more beautiful than what the picture shows.
The book I checked out from the library didn’t do justice to the subject [it did not answer my questions on the subject. It was not detailed enough]
pulling all the stops
یعنی تمام امکاناتمون رو به کار ببریم که یک کاری انجام بشه. مثلا همه تیم برنامه نویسی، کارهای دیگرشون رو ول کنن، سعی کنن این قسمت برنامه رو تمام کنن.
[MSNBC] Biden announces ‘month-long effort to pull all the stops’ to get Americans vaccinated
[The police chief says:] Pull all the stops! Leave no stones unturned until we find the missing child!
I am going to pull all the stops to keep custody of my child.
Something falling through the cracks
یعنی یک کاری که در حال انجام بود، بین کارهای دیگه گم شد. یا مثلا نصفه انجام شده بود، ایمیل به یکی زدید که قسمت بعدی کار رو انجام بده، اون یادش رفته، شما هم یادتون رفته پیگیری کنید.
Sorry this fell through the cracks, I’ll do it right away.
یا اگه میخواهین چک کنین که طرفتون یادش نرفته، بی ادبی نیست اگه بگین
Hi John. I just wanted to make sure this didn’t fall through the cracks. Did you get a chance to look at the options I sent you last week?
معنی قسر در رفتن/ فراموش شدن هم میده.
The criminals who were allowed to fall through the cracks by the police.
The disabled students who fell through the cracks of the education system.
Gives me butterflies = I feel butterflies in my stomach = I have butterflies.
دلشوره میگیرم. تو دلم رخت میشورن. نگرانم. دلم مثل سیر و سرکه میجوشه
همچنین به معنی هیجان زده بودنه. مثلا از عشق یا انتظار برای گرفتن چیزی که دوست داریم.
