To keep doing or talking about the same thing without achieving anything
E.g. This reading question is impossible. I keep thinking I’ve got the right answer, but then realize I haven’t. I’m just going round in circles.

Be unable to follow what someone is saying or remember what one is going to say next
E.g. The candidate began OK, but then she lost her thread and started talking about things unrelated to the task card.
stumble over one’s words
If you stumble over your words, you speak in a stuttering confused manner
E.g. I got too nervous in the speaking test and kept stumbling over my words.
labour the point
To describe or explain something in too much detail or when people have already understood it or repeat it when this is not necessary
E.g. I understand what you’re saying, there’s no need to labour the point.
beat around the bush
To avoid talking about what is important
E.g. Quit beating around the bush and say what’s on your mind.

Very quickly
E.g. He is talking at a mile a minute

In control of a situation and aware of changes
E.g. The stock market has been unpredictable, and you really have to stay on top of things.

E.g. Their political ideas have a lot of support on the ground.

To give up something harmful that you have done for a long time
E.g. She used to be a heavy smoker but she kicked the habit last year.
