Ideology Flashcards
Capitalism
Left wing view: Saito’s whole motivation for the mission is to prevent fischer controlling almost all the energy in the world. implies corporate control has a bad effect on the world.
Right wing view: Saito wants to break up Fischer’s market dominance to encourage free market capitalism
Deception
- aims to convince people that the natural view of reality is a distortion and there is a superior and greater reality
- links to narrative for the character and viewing experience for spectators: what’s real and what isn’t
- Cobb might be happier in the dream world than in real life
- Mal does not return to reality as the other world appeared superior
Family Life
Left wing view: Cobb’s family structure is unorthodox. Mal, the traditional mother figure has taken her own life to escape her family (which she believes aren’t real - or which don’t feel real enough to her); the father, Cobb, is on the run; and his father takes care of the children
Right wing view: Cobb’s family structure is disruptive - implied as unhealthy for all concerned. Cobb’s father warns him that the children are forgetting him; Cobb himself is tormented by the fact he can’t be there due to the actions of his wife. could be read as conservative view of family: that what is needed is the stabilising, loving father figure (also what Fischer lacks in his life).
What is a possible reason for Cobb’s projection of Mal being a villainous one?
it is the only way he can deal with his own guilt over her inception and subsequent ‘death’.
Mal remains a misogynist construct but one that points at a mentally disturbed and unreliable protagonist
What makes Inception an immoral film?
it focuses on Cobb’s personal issues instead of the ethics of what they are doing
