Ideology Flashcards

Q

ideology

A

An ideology is a set of ideas and values; it is shared by a group as a belief system. It is a worldview or a way to view the world.
The use of ideology can be interpreted in a negative way:
• A biased view to support a particular social group
• Ideas that hide the interests of a powerful group and tries to justify their privileged position.
• Ideas that prevent change by misleading people about their true interests.
• A closed belief system that is not open to criticism.

Popper described ideologies as ‘secular religions’. They describe how society works or should work and they also have a moral dimension. Ideologies claim a ‘monopoly of the truth’ and they can be used to oppress people. According to Popper, ideology is a closed system of thought which rejects alternative views.
