Identity Theory Flashcards
Limitations of behaviourism
believing, knowing, understanding are explained well by it
sensing, feeling or seeing images are not given good enough explanation
when i think but my behaviour does not issue an action from that, there must be something beyond behaviour
the idea that there are no sensation in the mental sense is plausible, may be more disposition to behave a certain way. But Smart says it is still unacceptable, because when you have pain, you are reporting you have a sensation.
Token identity(contingent)
each mental token is identical to a physical token ( hobbes materialism)
Type identity
Smart and place’s identity theory, every mental type that is possible to be is identical to the physical type
Identity theory can be contingent or of necessary truth
- that each mental event is a neurophysiological event and is a logical truth
- Contingent- each mental event is composed of a brain event
U.T. place argument that statement 1, the necessary truth of the identity theory
- knowledge of one does not imply knowledge of the other ie dont have to know which neuron fires
- statements about each are verified in different ways
- asserting one while denying the other does not imply a logical contradiction
U.T. place argument against the contingent truth of the identity theory
concious states are not always brain processes
