Provides an outlet for the expression of ones hidden selves, the exploration of non-conventional identities and thus is important in identity empowerment.
Is the online world entirely anonymous?
No, the presence off-line based relationships that are also engaged with online (e.g. Your schoolmate on FB), also known as anchored relationships, means that the Internet is not entirely anonymous.
How can an online relationship be anchored?
Through institutions, residence or mutual friends. The level of anchorage varies depending on the degrees to which online partners are identifiable and locatable offline.
The most important identifying information includes a person’s legal name, residential location and institutional affiliations.
