Identifying non-metal ions Flashcards
1
Q
Carbonate ions
A
- add dilute acid to sample
- acid will react with carbonate to produce CO2 gas
- will see effervescence
- bubble gas through lime water
- if cloudy = CO2 present = carbonate in sample
2
Q
Halide ions
A
- add dilute nitric acid to sample
- add dilute silver nitrate to solution
- halide ions produce a precipitate of the silver halide
3
Q
Halide ions - RESULTS
A
chloride ions - white precipitate of silver chloride
bromide ions - cream precipitate of silver bromide
iodide ions - yellow precipitate of silver iodide
4
Q
Sulfate ions
A
- add dilute hydrochloric acid to sample
- add barium chloride solution
- if sulfate ions present, white precipitate will form
