Identifying Gases Flashcards
What is the Colour and odor of Oxygen(O2)?
Colourless and odourless
What is the Colour and odour of Hydrogen(H2)?
Colourless and odourless
What is the Colour and odor of Carbon Dioxide(CO2)?
Colourless and odourless
What is the Colour and odor of Chlorine(Cl2)?
Greenish yellow gas with a pungent smell
What is the Colour and odor of Sulfur Dioxide(SO2)?
Colourless gas with a pungent smell
What is the Colour and odor of Ammonia(NH3)?
Colourless gas with a pungent smell
How do you identify Hydrogen(H2)?
Place a lighted splint at the mouth of the test tube.
The lighted splint is extinguished with a ‘pop’ sound
How do you identify Oxygen(O2)?
Insert a glowing splint into the test tube.
The glowing splint is rekindled.
How do you identify Carbon Dioxide(CO2)?
Bubble gas through limewater.
A white precipitate forms, and dissolves upon further bubbling.
How do you identify Chlorine(Cl2)?
Place a piece of moist blue litmus paper at the mouth of the test tube.
The moist blue litmus paper turns red, and is then bleached.
How do you identify Sulfur Dioxide(SO2)?
Place a piece of filter paper soaked witj acidified potassium manganate(VII) at the mouth of the test tube.
The purple acidified potassium manganate(VII) turns colourless
How do you identify Ammonia(NH3)?
Place a piece of moist red litmus paper at the mouth of the test tube.
The moist red litmus paper turns blue.
