Identify Anions Flashcards
Carbonate anion
Add a dilute acid
Effervescence is observed
Gas produced forms white precipitate with limewater
Gas is CO2
Nitrate anion
Add sodium hydroxide
Add aluminium foil
Warm the mixture
Effervescence is observed , A pungent gas produced turns moist red litmus paper blue , Gas is ammonia(NH3)
Sulfate anion
Add dilute nitric acid ,then aqueous barium nitrate or
Add dilute hydrochloric acid then add aqueous barium chloride
All lead to white precipitate of barium sulfate formed
Chloride and Iodide anion
Add dilute nitric acid , then add silver nitrate.
White precipitate of silver chloride
Or
Pale Yellow precipitate of silver iodide
Why is dilute nitric is added before barium nitrate and silver nitrate added?
To remove any carbonate or hydroxide ions which might form insoluble salts with the reagents added.
