Identification of ions and gases Flashcards
What is the test for carbonates and what is the result?
Test: Add dilute acid, then test for carbon dioxide gas
Test result: Effervescence, carbon dioxide produced
What is the test for halides (Cl-, Br-, and I-)?
Test: Acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add silver nitrate
Test result: (Cl- –> White ppt) (Br- —> Cream ppt) (I - —> Yellow ppt)
What is the test for nitrates and what is the result?
Test: Add aqueous sodium hydroxide, then aluminum foil; warm carefully
Test result: Ammonia produced
What is the test for sulfates and what is the result?
Test: Acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous barium nitrate
Result: White ppt
What is the test for sulfites and what is the result?
Test: Add a small volume of acidified aqueous potassium manganate (VII)
Result: Potassium manganate (VII) changes color from purple to colorless
What is the effect of aqueous sodium hydroxide and ammonia on aluminum?
EFFECT of NaOH: White ppt, soluble in excess, and giving a colorless solution
