A

Transfer of war prisoners from the imperial Japanese army, 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war were forced to walk 65 miles to baatan, many prisoners were beaten and killed along this route for not being able to keep up.

March on Washinton for jobs and freedom

A

On August 28th 1963 almost 250,000 people arrived to the march on Washinton for jobs and freedom. The purpose of the march was to advocate for civil rights of African american people and urge the Kennedy administration to pass a civil rights bill in congress. This was also where MLK gave his ‘I have a dream speech’.

Little Rock Central H.S

A

On the first day of school during desegregation the “little rock 9” were stopped from entering the school and even the Arkansas national guard was brought in to stop them. Until Eisenhower sent over federal troops to escort the little rock 9 into the building. The little rock 9 helped other African student gain access to segregated schools, they also helped to ensure desegregation was peaceful with the help of the government

A

A test that assessed the persons ability to read and write. However was a very difficult test and most questions were worded in a confusing manner leaving the grader to manipulate the outcome of the test. These tests were designed to prevent and discourage black voters.

James Meredith

A

Civil rights activist who was the first black American to attend the university of Mississippi. During the desegregation James Meredith had US marshalls to protect him, however a riot breaks out and goes for many hours before the administration building is surrounded and JKF sends in the national guard to stop the riot.

A

The 16th St. Baptist church was the target of a white supremacist group bombing. This attack claimed the lives of 4 young African american girls. This attack erupted an outrage of citizens who increased support to end segregation.

A

American civil rights activist who organized protests and voter registration drives to encourage the civil rights act and help it gain support. Evers was assassinated outside of his home on June 12th 1963

A

Civil rights acitivist who fought to register to vote, and helped many other black citizens register. She also shared her story at the Democratic national convention about her mistreatment from police and how she was beaten while arrested.

A

Also know as the black panther party, they fought against politce brutality and help communities. They had voter registration drives, organized free food programs and even gave breakfast to schools.

Napalm and agent orange

A

Agent orange was used during the vietnam war to clear dense forests and vegetation to help make it easier for soldiers to get through. Napalm was used in bombs, it was a chemical that burned really hot and really slow.

Pearl Harbor

A

In the early 1940s tensions between the US and japan were rising due to the invasion of china. On december 7th 1941 Japan did a surprise attack on Pearl harbor. They targeted military bases but ended up killing 2400 citizens. This was a turning point in world war 2 because America joined the war to take down japan.

Truman doctrine

A

A policy that says America will stand by nations and support them against authoritarian threats. The US will be able to support other countries by providing military and economic help.

Brown v board

A

A landmark decision by the supreme court that ruled segregated schools were unconstitutional according to the 14th amendment. This decision marked the end of segregation in schools even if the schools were equal in quality. This led to the integration of black children into schools.

Rosa parks

A

A civil rights activist who played a role in the montgomery bus boycott. Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man on the bus and move to the back of of the bus that was reserved for colored people. Parks was taken to jail and after she got out helped lead the bus boycott that 17000 people participated in. In the end the supreme court rules that the segregation of buses was unconstitutional.

Economic opportunity act

A

An act that helped citizens living in poverty, signed in by the LBJ administration to help his “war on poverty”. This act provided social programs including helping poor citizens gain education, healthcare and employment. For example this act made food stamps, medicare/medicaid a thing for those living in poverty.

26th amendment

A

The 26th amendment lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. The reason for lowering the voting age was because during world war 2 they lowered the draft age to 18 instead of 21 because they needed more people to fight. Citizens did not agree with this because they thought if they were old enough to fight for the US they should be old enough to vote in the US, this started the slogan “Old enough to fight, old enough to vote”.

The tet offensive

A

A major escalation of the war in vietnam. North Vietnamese and the communist viet cong forces launched and number of attacks against south vietnam and the US causing great loses in their fight. The tet offensive caused a lack of support from US citizens about the war going on. Around 10,000 soliders were killed.

Reaganomics

A

Reaganomics was trying to lower the cost of business. They used trickle down economics to try and lower tax rates, reduce regulations, and restrain government spending. This idea caused a wealth disparity between rich and impoverished americans. Reaganomics had pros and cons such as lowering poverty but increasing inequality. The unemployment rates dropped and inflation dropped too.
