What is the focus?

How does it link to context?

A

What is happening? This sculpture shows a Centaur rearing triumphantly over a dying human Lapith. The piece is moving (we can’t see the expressions of the two due to it being fragmented by they are moving to show naturalism of movement

What does it focus on? This focus on human suffering epitomises the intense humanism of Greek art.

How does it link to context? The sculpture also represents Greece’s struggle to resist being absorbed into the Persian Empire.

SO… these sculptures are using myths to present a heroic version of recent events.

Aspect of design: Athena Parthenos

  • Designed to be a focal point
  • is sculpture made with gold and ivory. Chryselephantine cult statues enjoyed high status in Ancient Greece.
  • Housed in the naos
  • It was the most renowned cult image of Athens (a human made sculpture to worship the goddess)
  • She holds a statue of Victory (A nike), placed by the Greeks to symbolise the victory over the Persians that Athena controlled.
  • In the other hand a spear; at her feet lies a shield and near the spear is a serpent.
  • Athena’s drapery fell in irregular folds making her seem very natural and realistic, enabling the visitors to gaze in awe.
