Idc Flashcards
Physical change
Substance undergoes a change in physical properties, change is generally reversible.
Chemical change
Chemical substance transformed to 1+ different substances.
Physical properties
Properties observed without making a new substance. Ex: colour, texture, smell, state, hardness.
Qualitative and quantitative
- Descriptive, observed not measured
- Numbers, measurable data
Chemical properties
Determined by a substance changed, and a new substance made. Ex: ability to rust, acidity and radioactivity.
Matter
Pure substance or mixture.
States: solid, liquid, gas.
Pure substance
Element of compound.
Mixture
Physically combined, but can separate to original components. 2+ pure substances mixed.
Element
Single atom
Compound
2+ elements
2 types of mixtures
Mechanical (heterogeneous mixture) and homogeneous mixture (solution)
Heterogeneous mixture (mechanical mixture)
Components separated, can see different components.
Homogeneous mixture (solutions)
Combination of two pure substances. Cannot see separate components.
Alloy
Homogeneous mixture of metals.
Suspension
Heterogeneous mixture, solids particles don’t dissolve. Suspended throughout, floating freely.
