Idaho Power Curriculum Flashcards
Aquifer
An underground geologic formation of rock, soil, or sediment that is naturally saturated with water; an aquifer stores groundwater.
By-Product
A secondary result, produced in doing or producing something else
Combustion
A chemical process that creates heat and light for example fire.
Condensation
Preservation, protection or restoration of the natural environment, natural ecosystems, vegetation, and wildlife.
Contaminated
Made impure or unsuitable by contact or mixture with something unclean, bad, etc.
Demand
The amount of electricity required to turn on or run an appliance.
Disperse
To break up and vanish
Evaporation
The process by which water turns into a vapor or gas.
Fossil fuel
A combustible material created naturally beneath Earth’s surface over a long period of time, from the remains of plants and animals.
Fresh water
Naturally occurring water on the earth’s surface in ice sheets, ice caps, glaciers, bog, ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams, and underground as groundwater in quifers and underground streams.
Groundwater
Water found underground in porous layers of rocks and soil.
Hydrologic cycle
Water cycle; the movement of water from its various sources, through the stages of precipitation, evaporation, and condensation.
Hydropower
Electricity that is generated using the energy of flowign water.
Kilowatt
A unit of measurement equal to 1,000 watts.
Kilowatt-Hour
A unit of measurement of energy equal to 1,000 watts electricity used for one hour.
Kinetic energy
Energy an object possesses due to the motion of the body or its particles.
LED(Light Emitting Diode)
A semiconductor diode that emits light when conducting current and is used in electronic equipment, especially for displaying readings on digital watches and calculators, and in light bulbs.
Matter
Any substance which has mass and occupies space.
Non-potable
Not safe to drink
Non-renewable resource
A natural resource that isn not capable of being renewed, replaced, or takes a very long time to replace, such as fossil fuels.
On-peak
A period of time in which there is a large consumer need for energy.
Phantom load
Energy used by a device when it is in standby mode or in the “off” position.
Potential energy
Energy which an object has stored because of its position, or arrangement of particles.
Photosynthesis
The process in green plants and certain other organisms by which carbohydrates are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water using light as an energy source. Most forms of photosynthesis release oxygen as a by-product.
