Felony: if police k9 is seriously injured or death is caused with no legal justification and intent to do so
Misdemeanor: police k9 suffers minor injury or is struck, beat, or tormented with no legal justification and intent to do so

An officer will not be held criminally or civilly liable if the k9 has been trained to assist in LE purposes and injury occurs when the dog is reasonably and carefully being used in apprehension, arrest, or location of a suspect
