Pre History
The prehistory refers to Genesis 1-11. It is impossible to demonstrate one way or another whether the events in these chapters took place, rather stories relay large biblical and religious truths; ex: Creation, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Flood, Tower of Babel.
Significance: The stories of the prehistory are designed to show the difference between humans and God and render comprehensible the Israelite understanding of nature and history. The prehistory includes etiological stories that help show why things are the way they are.

P Creation Account
- The P source was created around 500 B.C.E
- The P (Priestly) source depicts an all powerful God who speaks the Earth into existence with humans last in the order of creation (Gen. 1)
- Significance: The P creation account depicts a more aloof and impersonal God that helps to create the multifaceted God of the Torah
J Creation Account
-The J (Yahwist) source depicts a personal Lord God who molds people with his own hands (Gen. 2)
Tetragrammaton
The tetragrammaton from the greek meaning “four letters” represents the name of the Lord, YHWH. The tetragrammaton is revealed to Moses in Ex. 3 in the Theophany of the Name and it is how the J Source gets its name.
Significance: The name of the Lord is incredibly sacred and holy to Jews, so much so that they will not say it aloud instead replacing it with Adonai. After the Theophany of the Name all the sources of the Documentary Hypothesis use the name YHWH.

Passover
The Passover (Pesach) is a Jewish holiday commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. The 10th Plague of Egypt was that the Angel of Death would come to kill all of the firstborn sons, so the Israelites were instructed to put lambs blood on their door posts so that the Angel would "pass over" their homes. (Ex. 11-12) Significance: The plagues, and especially passover, were designed to show the Israelites the might of the Lord, and also to demonstrate that he would protect them because they were his chosen people. Passover is a celebration of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery under the pharaohs.
